Heading into their first at-bat, the Golden Hawks found themselves in a 6-run hole against Northeast but they didn’t panic.
Mid-Prairie chipped away at the lead a few runs at a time, before eventually taking an 11-7 lead into the seventh inning. After getting the Rebels down to their last out, Northeast had four batters in a row get hits, enough to tie the game at 11-11.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Golden Hawks got a hit from Abbi Patterson and moved her over to second on a sac bunt from Anna Vilovchik. Patterson took third base on a bobbled ball by the catcher. Next up to the plate with two outs was Rylee Vercande. She was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a steal. Jaselyn Robertson then struck out for out three, so the game headed to extras.
“They’re a great hitting team. We’ve had these epic games with Northeast almost every single year that I’ve coached,” Mid-Prairie coach Kara Beatty said. “Their 2-3-4-5 hitters are some of the best in the state, so they did their job basically.”
Northeast took an early lead in the eighth inning after Natalie Spooner doubled and then came in on a single hit by her sister, Valerie Spooner. Things tumbled down from there as Northeast finished the inning with five runs capped by a Casidy Dondiego three-run home run.
Mid-Prairie was able to add one run in the bottom of the eighth to give the game a final of 16-12 in favor of Northeast.
“We’ve had our struggles this year, but the most important thing is that we’re getting better each game,” Beatty said.
She said the fight they showed coming back from the 6-0 deficit early was big.
They scored their first two in the third inning after Kylee Kos doubled to give Mid-Prairie their first hit. From there Myah Lugar came on to courtesy run and was moved over on a Kendra Schaefer groundout. Abbi Patterson singled to centerfield and brought Lugar home.
Anna Vilovchik then singled to the right side of the infield on a hard hit ball and eventually Jaselyn Robertson drew a walk to bring home Patterson and make the score 6-2.
Patterson singled again in the fourth inning, bringing home Cassidy Rourke. Mid-Prairie took their first lead of the game in the fifth inning, where they used some patience at the plate to cause havoc.
“We got on the first pitcher early and she started struggling. We were patient and got walked so they brought in the other pitcher,” Beatty said.
The Golden Hawks scored six in the inning despite only two hits; they walked four times in the inning. Karsen Jehle then had a triple in the sixth inning that brought in a run. She scored on a Georgia Nisly groundout.
