Tommie Hyson from Benton, Louisiana had never played a round of golf before in his life.

Such a statement then begs the question why the Air Force Veteran, who served in Da Nang in 1969 and 1970 as military law enforcement, would make the trip north to participate in the National Veterans TEE Tournament, TEE being short for Training, Exposure, Experience.

Hyson said it was an instructor who convinced him to jump at the opportunity to meet and socialize with other veterans like him.

“That’s what I’m all about,” Hyson said. “I want to get to know people, interact with them. Be able to just get out of the house and do things with other people.”

Fresh off his first round of golf ever, a practice round before hitting the course again on Thursday, Hyson had nothing but positive things to say about his maiden voyage on the course.

“It was great. I had some great trainers, they showed me how to hold the club. I think I hit one ball 200 yards,” Hyson said.

The event is so much more than a golf tournament, however. September 13, Riverside Casino hosted an event informing veterans about the importance of nutrition. Hyson himself was looking forward to going bowling, though he admitted his skills were “average at best.”

The event drew over 240 veterans, though the hurricanes down south did not allow for approximately 30 veterans to make the trip due to flight cancellations. The veterans were spread across courses, including local venues like the Kalona Golf Club and Blue Top Ridge at the Riverside Casino.

Though he came for the camaraderie with other veterans, it was another group of people that really stood out to Hyson: the volunteers.
