ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The Highland softball team recorded 17 hits in an 11-7 win over Danville on Monday. The Huskies built an 11-3 lead after six innings on the way to their tenth conference victory.

“I think our pitch selection was good,” Highland coach Carrie Wieland said. “I thought most of them stayed with their at-bat fairly well and didn’t chase a lot of bad pitches.”

Sarah Schneider, Kelsey Hora and Kylie Wood each reached base with a one out single in the second inning. Abbie Miller and Megan Hoenig each had a hit with two outs as the Huskies took an early 4-0 lead.

Hora finished 3-4 with four runs scored. Schneider was 3-3 and scored three times. Aly Stokes was 3-3 with three RBI and doubled to start a three-run fifth inning that put the Huskies ahead 9-2.

Brylee Carolan allowed three hits and four walks over four and 2/3 innings and struck out five. Highland had some defensive issues and allowed two unearned runs to score in the seventh.

“We tried to give Megan (Hoenig) a break because we have six games this week,” Wieland said. “I thought Brylee did a good job up until… she got tired. Once that happened, we made a change and Shalyn (Kirk) did a pretty good job.”

Highland (17-5, 10-1) and Wapello (19-8, 10-1) each trail Louisa-Muscatine (22-4, 11-0) by a game in the conference standings with three games left on the schedule. Wapello travels to L-M on Tuesday, June 27 and hosts Highland on Thursday, June 29.

The Huskies will honor the 2007 state championship team between the junior varsity and varsity games with Winfield-Mount Union on Friday, June 30. Ashlee Simon allowed just 16 earned runs in 34 games and struck out 438 batters as the Huskies went 34-4 in state championship season 10 years ago.
