ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Joan Schnabel, certified raptor educator, and Johnson County Conservation will host a program about Iowa’s birds of prey on Saturday, August 13 from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Conservation Education Center in Kent Park.

The program will feature interesting information about the life history and adaptations of two live birds and other birds of prey found in Iowa. All ages will enjoy seeing these beautiful creatures up-close as well as learning from Joan as she shares her experience caring for these animals.

Joan Schnabel is a former doctor who, upon retiring, moved to the Iowa City community to be closer to family. While living in Wisconsin, she developed a passion for birds of prey and spent many years working to become a certified raptor educator. She currently cares for a turkey vulture, great horned owl, red-tailed hawk, and American kestrel, all of which are used to educate local citizens about the birds of Iowa and their amazing adaptations. Two of Joan’s birds will be present during the program.

Registration is required for this free program. To register or for more information, please call Johnson County Conservation education staff at (319)645-1011.
