ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Washington County 4-H County Council sponsored their 9th annual Washington County Spring Preview Cattle Show on Saturday, April 15. The show was an Iowa Junior Beef Breeds Association sanctioned show held at the Washington County Fairgrounds. 113 youth from Washington County and across the state participated.

Supreme Champion breeding heifer went to Gracie Danner from West Liberty with a commercial heifer. $250 prize money was sponsored by Kalona Tire- Ronnie Hershberger. Reserve champion breeding heifer went to Kacie Rickels of Monticello with a Maine Anjou heifer. $150 prize money sponsored by Washington County Corn Growers Association. In the market beef division, Supreme Champion went to Avery Shalla of Riverside with a crossbred steer. The $250 prize money was sponsored by Holmes Livestock Logistics – Jared Holmes. Reserve champion market beef went to Abby Badger of Bagley with a crossbred steer. The $150 prize money was sponsored by Eichelberger Farms.

27 Washington County exhibitors participated in the show. Several of them earning top honors. In the breeding division: Logan Harmsen of Wellman earned champion Horned Hereford. Iris Peterson of Washington earned champion Saler. Conner Shalla of Kalona earned champion Foundation Simmental. Braydon Younge earned reserve champion commercial heifer. In the market division Avery Shalla of Riverside earned champion crossbred steer and then went on to win the overall Grand Champion Market Animal.

The cattle show was planned by the Washington County 4-H County Council with the help of the 4-H Youth Committee. Youth volunteers assisted with set up, check-in, ring help, food booth and clean up. Proceeds from the event go towards 4-H and fairground improvement projects. The event was made possible by the generous support of local businesses and families.
