ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

TIPTON-- The Mid-Prairie girls beat out three other ranked squads to win a district title at Tipton and qualify for the state cross country meet next week.

"The girls ran amazing," Mid-Prairie's Marie Hostetler said. "Everybody just ran super tough."

Hostetler finished second with a time of 17:40 to lead the Golden Hawks. The next Mid-Prairie runner to cross the line, freshman Mitzi Evans in sixth place, was vital to the team race between the Golden Hawks and Class 2A No. 2 Williamsburg. Evans finished before a Williamsburg runner, giving Mid-Prairie two across the finish line before their first.

Williamsburg then had two runners cross in 7th and 8th place, but Moriah Brase was close behind in 11th in 20:14. Ana Fleming returned from an injury to finish in 16th in 20:34. The scoring lineup was anchored by Kessa Jones in 18th, who beat out teammate Kate Cavanagh in intersquad sprint to the finish line.

As a team the Golden Hawks scored a 53 (2-6-11-16-18), enough to edge Williamsburg (7-8-14-15-17) by eight places.

Angelina Evans was No. 7 for Mid-Prairie and finished in 36th place with a time of 22:01.

Hostetler was bested individually by Springville-Central City runner Emily Staal, but she said the race can be used as a learning experience and that she'll be ready for next week's state meet.

"That has definitely been a goal this season to learn how to race with somebody because I knew that I would have to. She definitely gave me the opportunity today and I felt I raced well," Hostetler said.

Now with a district title in hand, the Golden Hawks will turn their attention to a potential repeat as state champions.
