ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The Kalona centennial book notes that “by 1880 the town had a drug store owned by Jesse Longwell, one hardware store, a post office and two saloons.” Since previous articles have addressed the hardware store, post office and saloons, this article will discuss drug stores in 19th and early 20th century Iowa.

Jesse Longwell’s drug store was on Myer’s Street a block and a half from the depot, about where the Kalona Family Restaurant is currently located. In 1885 Longwell sold his business to J. Isholtz, who later sold to Dr. Allen who had his office in the rear of the drug store he owned and also operated. Besides being a graduate of the medical school in Iowa City he was also a registered pharmacist. This series of events brings the story full circle. As it turns out after Longwell sold the pharmacy in Kalona and opened another drug store in Wellman. He remained in business there with a partner and later his son Albert for almost 35 years.

On Aug. 8 approximated 65 people gathered at the Kalona Historical Village to honor the families who have served the community through the hardware, medical, drug store and saloon businesses. The next four businesses to be researched and honored are the funeral home, bank, telephone company, and newspaper. We encourage anyone with pictures, historical accounts or artifacts to contact Jan Ferry at 319-325-2178 or jferry@kctc.net. Follow the progress of the new Wahl Museum at kalonastreetscape.com.
