ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Trent Yoder wanted to use his talents to be a part of his children’s education.

Yoder was given that opportunity by Mid-Prairie Superintendent Mark Schneider in 2015 despite Yoder’s 1998 conviction for sexual exploitation of a minor for videotaping a high school student changing clothes in a school bathroom in western Iowa where he was a teacher.

When asked why he chose to volunteer at the school, Yoder said, “That’s what I’m good at. Someone from the Mid-Prairie faculty the very first year that I volunteered said to me ‘I appreciate that you have a teaching background, and I’m glad we can make use of that.’ That made me feel appreciated in a small way.”

He said in an interview with The News this week that he started volunteering when his son started school in 2008.

“I wanted (my children) to see me using my talents in the community,” Yoder said. “I think that’s what everyone should do. The other reason is that if we’re good at something, if we have gifts at something, we’re happier when we’re using those gifts.”

He said he also felt the desire to use his teaching background in some way.

“A big part of it was for my children,” he said. “A big part of it was also so that I was able to have some small semblance of normalcy again and feel like I was benefitting our community. I was a teacher for several years. I had been sitting dormant for 10 years, just quietly going crazy, doing nothing.”

After the district ran a background check in 2014, Yoder was told he could no longer volunteer at the school.
