Come Friday the Kalona Historical Village will be packed full of exhibits, foods of all kinds and good times. Old favorites, as well as some new attractions will be on display at this year’s Kalona Fall Festival.

Fall Festival Organizer Nancy Roth said the festival will be trying to bring back various pioneer demonstrations this year and in the future.

“We used to have a lot more of the pioneer-style demonstrations in past years, and we want to try and bring some of that back this year and in the future,” Roth said. “This year we’re bringing back the dog treadmill, which was built in the 1800s. It was basically a little treadmill a dog or some other animal would hop on and power stuff like a washing machine.”

Roth said the dog treadmill would have an actual dog running on it and demonstrating it. There will be a guest at the Historical Village during Fall Fest as well.

“We’ll have a girl living in the log cabin during the festival,” Roth said. “She’ll be there to talk to people and show them different things, like weaving, stuff like that.”

Visitors will also have the chance to see the beginning of the Historical Village’s newest building, the Wahl Museum.

“We’re going to have people come into the shell of the building, and they’ll be able to see where everything will be inside,” Roth said. “We hope to have the building done by 2019.”

Roth is hoping for a bigger turnout than last year, which was hurt by flooding in the area.
