ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The District 39 State Senate race was one of three regional races featured in a candidate forum at the Coralville Public Library on Tuesday, Oct. 16.

However, only one of the District 39 candidates – Democratic incumbent State Sen. Kevin Kinney – took part in the forum.

“Too often these forums are loaded with partisans from one side or the other,” Republican challenger Heather Hora said. “The event was even held outside my district. I spent the night in the district talking to voters at their door and on the phone.”

District 39 covers parts of Washington, Keokuk and Johnson counties.

“I think it’s a shame because I think voters need to look at the differences between us,” Kinney said in his opening remarks at the forum, which was livestreamed by the Johnson County League of Women Voters and recorded for rebroadcast on Iowa Public Television.

Kinney offered his views on a number of issues, including education funding, Medicaid privatization, gun control and the state’s fetal heartbeat bill.
