ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Lone Tree was able to get an early jump on Highland with a 3-run first inning in a 7-6 win over the Huskies last Tuesday.

Lone Tree coach Mike Close said the early runs were a nice boost for the Lions, as they’ve been in the opposite situation for most of the year.

“We usually are the ones that are playing from behind and that’s been hard,” Close said.

He was especially happy with what his players did once they got on base.

“The way we were able to score tonight was good. We played small-ball and did a good job running the bases. We put pressure on them to make plays and it worked out,” Close said.

The Lions compiled seven runs on six hits, scoring at least once in the first five frames of the game. Avery Knock was the winning pitcher with 5.1 innings pitched. He allowed five hits, six runs and struck out five batters in the win.

Knock was able to help himself out early, with a two RBI single in the first to give Lone Tree the 3-0 lead. Will Hotz scored in the second on a passed ball to make it 4-0 Lone Tree.

The Huskies cut into the 4-0 lead in the third inning as Cole Adamson tagged up off a Zack Lasek fly ball to center field. Then Brady Hahn was hit by a pitch and Robert Yoder singled. Luke Miller hit the ball to right field and both Hahn and Yoder scored to make it 4-3.

Harmon Miller hit a solo shot straight out to center field; his first career home run to make it 5-3. The Lions made it 6-3 in the fourth after Hotz drew another walk and scored on a Highland error. In the fifth Tim Mills drove in Avery Knock, who tagged up on a deep fly ball to center field. That would do it for the Lions scoring on the night, at that point they just needed to hold on defensively.
