Girls wrestling has been growing in the state of Iowa, and Vercande is one of 157 girls registered with the IHSAA this season. Nationwide girls wrestling numbers have doubled from the 2014 season to the 2017-2018 season according to the National Federation of State High School Associations.

This will also be the first year with a separate girls state wrestling championships. The championships will take place on Jan. 19 at Waverly-Shell Rock High School and are organized by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association.

The event is planned to have 10 weight classes at 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 152, 170, 195 and heavyweight.

Mid-Prairie head coach Justin Garvey said currently Vercande is rehabbing an injury, but if healthy she would attend the first state championships.
