The new school year – 2017-18 – will begin with the annual Back to School Night on Monday Aug. 21 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. This has traditionally been an opportunity for parents and students to meet with teachers and catch up with changes implemented over the summer.

This year’s Night will include a new activity, there will be a surplus equipment sale in the Old Gym. The sale will include furniture, office equipment, and general stuff, once useful but now unwanted, that’s been accumulating. Sales are first come first serve and sold as is.

This year is also an election year for the Lone Tree School Board. Election Day is Sept. 12. There are three candidates running for open positions. They are Josh Zaruba and incumbents Christina Magruder and Michael Waldschmidt.

Work on the the Wellness Center has been attracting a lot of attention in the form of “sidewalk supervisors” of all ages standing along the east side of Devoe. Construction is progressing on schedule. Walls are going up and putting up the roof is set for Sept. 1. Once the walls and roof are in place and windows and doors installed, work on the interior can begin. Completion date will be in September of 2018. Those interested in photos and updates can find them on the school’s Facebook page.

And along with the new school year comes up-dates and changes in the school’s handbooks for elementary, middle school and high school. Students and parents are encouraged to read through these handbooks so no one is taken by surprise by, for example, the new requirement that all backpacks and bags, including purses, be kept in student lockers during the day and the ban on cell phones in middle school classrooms.

On the elementary school front, 25 students participated in the summer reading program. Summer is now over but the school is still in need of Reader Buddies from the community.
