ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

RIVERSIDE - Seven seniors and two sophomores from the Highland football team were among those recognized when the Class 1A district four all-district teams were released. First team selections Bill Burton, Chase Rath, Johnny Poeschel and Trey Lasek led the Huskies to a winning record for the first time since 2012.

Senior Bill Burton finished the season with 506 combined rushing/receiving yards, two rushing touchdowns, three receiving touchdowns, and two kickoff return touchdowns. Burton also led the team with 52.5 tackles, eight interceptions, two fumble recoveries and two defensive touchdowns.

Senior Chase Rath finished fifth in the state in yards/punt (among players with double-digit punts) with 41.7 yards per attempt. Offensively, Rath caught 24 passes for 314 yards and three touchdowns. He had three interceptions, including one pick-six on the defensive side of the ball.

Senior Johnny Poeschel had 36 tackles and led the Husky defense with six tackles for loss.

Sophomore Trey Lasek rushed for 799 yards and eight touchdowns on just 13.5 carries per game. Lasek had three interceptions and led the team with 450 yards on kickoff and punt returns. Lasek had a 90-yard kickoff return touchdown in a 50-14 win over West Liberty in week two.

Senior Trent Lasek was a second-team selection for the Huskies after leading the district with 41 receptions.

He finished with a total of 555 yards and eight touchdowns. Blake Donovan was also a second team selection. He had four of Highland’s six solo sacks, and finished the season with 27.5 tackles, five for loss.

Donovan, Poeschel, and Matt Hoenig, who received honorable mention, opened holes for a Huskies’ rushing attack that gained 1,456 yards on the season. The line also protected senior Jake Wood, who led the district with 184 pass attempts.

Wood, who also received honorable mention, completed 56 percent of his passes for 1203 yards and 15 touchdowns in his third season as the starting quarterback. Brady Hahn, who also received honorable mention, finished the season with 29 tackles. His offensive highlight was a 51-yard touchdown rush at Van Buren.

Hahn and Trey Lasek will lead a talented junior class in 2017. While four of the Huskies’ top five tacklers will graduate, sophomores Hahn, Lasek, Brody and Dan Burton, Jordan Sosa and Cory Stewart combined for over 90 tackles this season. Freshmen Cole Adamson and Zack Lasek combined for 36 more, giving Highland fans plenty of reasons to be excited for next fall.
