ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

(BPT) - Summer is many things to many people. There are pools, cookouts and parties on the deck, or you can pack up on a moment’s notice to leave town and explore something new. Beyond the long days, the extra sunscreen and the skipping out of work a bit early, the sure way you know summer has arrived is when you finally take that first sip of a cold cocktail on a hot day.

Recently, mixologists, revelers, social butterflies and homebodies of all types have been buzzing about Cava, a type of sparkling Spanish wine with a balanced and fruity taste that comes in a variety of flavor profiles. Because of its inclusive flavor and fine bubbles, Cava has become an ideal ingredient to some exciting cocktails. So if you feel like you need to kick your summer into high gear, here are five Cava-infused cocktails to help you do just that.

The Hot Streak

Looking for some color or something interesting to do with that orange juice you have in the refrigerator? This classy combo is an infusion of herbs, sweetness, citrus and just a hint of bitter.

2 ounces of Aperol1/2 ounce of orange juice2 ounces of chilled Segura Viudas Brut Cava1 lemon wheel

Pour the Aperol into a highball glass over ice, followed by the orange juice then top it off with the Cava. Combine in this order and pour slowly to create distinct colored layers. Garnish with a lemon wheel and enjoy!

Gin Sparkler

Sometimes it’s the most unlikely of pairs who make the best friends, or the best marriages. The unlikely pair we have here is gin and Cava. A take on the classic French 75 cocktail, this variant is a bit more worldly, and a tad bit sassy.

2 ounces dry gin1/2 ounce lemon or lime juice1/2 ounce simple syrup1 ounce dry Cava, chilled

Pour the gin, lemon or lime juice and simple syrup over ice then give it five or six good shakes. Pour into a Champagne flute (keep out the ice!) and top it off with the Cava.

Strawberry Cava Slushy

For this magical concoction, you need to do a little planning to prepare everything, but as you'll see the results will be stupendous.

1 bottle Segura Viudas Rose Cava1/2 cup granulated sugar1/2 cup water12-14 strawberries, trimmed and quartered

Start by pouring the Cava into a large container, seal it and put it in the freezer overnight. You'll also want to freeze the strawberries overnight as well.

Heat up the water then add the sugar so it dissolves. Let the water cool to room temperature.

Add all the ingredients to a blender. Blend until it’s the consistency of the slushies you loved so much as a kid. Serve immediately.

Soyer au Cava

Sometimes you want a cocktail; sometimes you want ice cream. Sometimes you might think of adding ice cream to your bubbly. Here’s how. You can thank us after you indulge.

1 scoop of vanilla ice cream (ice cream lovers can add more)A dash or two of brandyA dash or two of maraschino liqueur2 ounces of Cava (or a little more if it has been a long day)

Simply scoop the ice cream into a glass, add the brandy and maraschino liqueur, then pour the Cava over the top.

The Vampire’s Refresher

This blood-red cocktail plays off a combination of citrus and dry Cava that’s perfect for sun lovers and vampires alike.

2 blood orangesA burst of fresh lemon juiceA couple shakes of bitters1/2 cup of chilled Segura Viudas Extra Dry Cava

Slice the two blood oranges in half and squeeze out all their juice with a reamer. Strain out the pulp with a mesh strainer then add the juice to a pitcher. Add the lemon juice, bitters and Cava. Gently stir and serve in Champagne flutes.
