ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Iowa’s fifth season – road construction season – is underway.

This past week, crews finished up last year’s project at the intersections of Hwy. 1 and Hwy. 22 by removing all of the rumble strips in the lanes that approach the intersection.

“With the new lane design configuration, the existing rumble strips are no longer in the correct location so they are being patched,” Iowa DOT District 5 Transportation Planner Hector Torres-Cacho said. “With the current speed limits and the increased development near the intersection - which is within city limits - the rumble strips in advance of the stop conditions are no longer needed.”

Another Iowa DOT project is slated to begin at the beginning of July.

Torres-Cacho said that a micro-surfacing project on Hwy. 22 between Wellman and Kalona will begin on July 2.

Work will be done from Sixth Avenue in Wellman to Hwy. 1 in Kalona.

“Traffic will be maintained with traffic control for two lanes with one travel lane in each direction, and the assistance of flaggers and pilot cars when the two lanes are reduced to one lane in spot locations,” Torres-Cacho said. “Through work zones, one-lane conditions, and no lane width restriction expected.”

The project will be underway when RAGBRAI comes through the area on July 27, but Torres-Cacho said that DOT officials are working with RAGBRAI organizers.

“The organizers of RABRAI have been in contact with our office and are aware of all our ongoing construction projects on planned RAGBRAI routes,” he said. “If RAGBRAI is going through a route where we have construction, we have construction notes on plans so contractors are aware of the special event and they can plan their work accordingly. We have also been coordinating with the RAGBRAI organizers regarding where they want us to place message boards for the event.”
