After years of wishful talk and months of intense work, it’s finally here.

Lone Tree has its Wellness Center. And it’s going to be officially open with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, June 18, at 5 p.m.

Superintendent Ken Crawford said that the grand opening will be simple. Former Superintendent Michael Reeves, who got the Wellness Center project started before he retired, will be there.

There will be tours and cookies and lemonade and the opportunity to sign up for memberships. Crawford said he is “very excited that the center is open and ready for public use.”

He said the center is open to people in Riverside, River Junction, Hills, Nichols, Kalona … in short, anyone and everyone interested in joining. He added “the cost of memberships is the same, the terms are the same, no matter where people live.”

The center offers weight and cardio rooms, a full-size gym, a walking and jogging track, and locker rooms and showers. It has a conference room that can be reserved.

The gym, which is set up for basketball and volleyball, can be reserved. And the gym is there for pickup games at no extra cost beyond the regular fee. Right now, it’s being tested by high school teams using it for summer practice while the floor of the school’s south gym is being repaired.

Still in the works will be fitness classes. What will be offered will depend on demand and the availability of qualified teachers. Among the possibilities are yoga, fitness classes for seniors, and martial arts.
