1928 - 2018

Lester Vern Ford, 90 of Dixon, Iowa, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 12, 2018 at Hope Church, Dixon. Visitation will be held on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018, from 4-7 p.m. at the Runge Mortuary, Davenport, and one hour prior to the funeral at Hope Church, Dixon. He will be laid to rest in the Dixon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hope Church, P.O. Box 56, Dixon, IA, 52745 or Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, 2465 Tech Drive, Bettendorf, IA 52722. Lester was born Jan. 25, 1928, to Eugene James and Emma Rose Rische Ford at Herreid, S.D. where he grew up on the family farm. He married Clara Beck on June 4, 1950, at Peace Lutheran Church, Herreid, S.D. He did farm work and construction helping to build the Oahe Dam in Pierre, S.D. starting in 1951. In 1966, he moved his family to rural Donahue, Iowa where he worked on a farm until 1979. Lester then worked for the city of Davenport’s water treatment facility until he retired in April 1993.

He spent his retired years enjoying vacationing on his motorcycle with his wife, Clara, visiting and traveling with family, working on family history research, doing woodworking projects, building and working on computers, and sudoku puzzles. He was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church for more than 50 years.

Lester is survived by his wife of 68 years: Clara; and nine children: Gloria Olvera of Houston, Texas, James Ford of Sesser, Ill., Mary (John) Rosenboom of Eldridge, John (RoxeAnn) Ford of Davenport, Jean Ford of Dixon, Dale Ford (Armand Zakarauskas) of Milford, Conn., Paul (Donna) Ford of Wellman, Tim Ford (Angie Perez), Los Angeles, Calif., and Sheri (Rick) Duhme of Maquoketa. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren: Tony Olvera, Carolyn Oathout, Susan Walker, Chris (Patricia) Rosenboom, Jennifer Schmelter, Stephanie (Bret) Haupert, Steve Rosenboom, Sarah (Joe Franco) Ford, Nicholas Ford, Robbi Ford, Amber (Paul) Nicholson, Ashley Reubin-Ford, Travis Ford, Dion Ford, Ronald Ford, and Shawna Pennock; 19 great-grandchildren including Hannah, Katelinn, Kaleb, and Hayden of Kalona; and a sister: Lavina Iverson, of Watertown, S.D.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House for their care of Lester in the last month of his life.
