Maria Meller will never forget the time a young boy got into a biking accident outside her house and walked away safely, all because he had on a helmet.

This moment changed her life and made her realize that she wanted to do something about it.

Meller wanted to help her community, so she brought together other organizations to help teach children the importance of bike safety.

The free event took place in the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort parking lot on Sunday, July 8.

When children first arrived to the site with their bikes, they were fitted for a new helmet by the members of the Riverside Fire Department and Washington County Sheriff’s Office. The city of Riverside provided 100 helmets for the event.

The children then went to the World of Bikes tent where they got their bikes checked out and repaired, if needed. They ended the day learning from Troy Carter about the importance of hand signals and following road signs right before riding around a bike course.

Carter has been a part of the Iowa Bike Coalition for four years, and was happy to be at the event, helping children.

“The best part about being in the coalition is being able to teach kids about bike safety,” he said.

As for Meller, she was grateful that the casino let them do this in its parking lot.

She said that it was the perfect spot for the kids to ride their bikes.
