ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Wellman RAGBRAI organizers are partnering with a vendor who has years of experience with setting up towns to maximize sales when the tens of thousands of bike riders roll through.

Ed Twedt met with about 30 people packed into the Wellman City Hall on Thursday, April 19.

“We choose to work in one town on each day of RAGBRAI,” Twedt said. He was attracted to the wide main street in Wellman where vendors will set up.

He also said that Wellman will be a natural stop on the route. The previous town on the route, Keota, is 16 miles away. Riders will be ready to get off their bikes when they hit that “nice, wide” main street in downtown Wellman, 28 miles into the day on a day when riders will cover just 57 miles.

Mayor Ryan Miller said the celebration will be centered at the intersection of Third Street and Eighth Avenue in front of Freeman’s grocery. Vendors will be located along Eighth Avenue north and south of the intersection.

East of Eighth Avenue on Third Street will be bike parking.

“We are going to make sure there is more than enough parking,” said City Councilman and RAGBRAI organizer Shannon McCain, who added that the city needs to have a clear layout for vendors and activities in Wellman.

“If it is confusing for these bikers, they are just going to go on to the next town,” McCain said.
