A popular through route north of Kalona will be closed for the time being.

Construction on Maple Avenue began on Monday.

For the next six weeks, Maple Avenue, from the north Kalona corporate line to Washington-Johnson Road, will be closed to through traffic.

In addition to this closure, 105th Street, between Maple Avenue and Nutmeg Avenue, will be closed.

These roads are being closed for a grading and rock resurfacing project.

Although the roads will be closed to through traffic, access to local businesses and residences will be maintained.

At times, access may be limited from one direction or another and may change on short notice.

The work will include salvaging the existing rock surface and grading the road to restore its shape and improve ditch drainage.

Once the grading work is completed, five inches of new rock will be placed as the final surface course. After the rock has been placed the road will be stabilized with Base One by Washington County forces.

Conerstone Excavating of Washington was awarded the $247,000 contract for the project.

Questions pertaining to this road closure and project should be directed to the Washington County Engineer’s Office at 319-653-7731.
