Look out, Ben and Jerry.
This week, Kalona Creamery is launching its own line of ice cream.
“That’s really exciting for us,” Mindy Seiffert, director of marketing, said. “None of our family of companies has ever made ice cream before. That’s brand new to us, and also brand new to this location.”
The initial plan is to produce eight flavors of ice cream that will be sold at the creamery.
“Our approach to the flavors is that we’re trying to focus on using local ingredients,” Seiffert said. “It’s all made with our Kalona SuperNatural milk and cream. A lot of the different flavors utilize ingredients from local providers.”
In addition to ingredients that come from the creamery, the ice cream will include Kalona Chocolates, Miller’s jam of Kalona, shortbread from The Perfect Blend in Mount Vernon and Millstream Brewing Company soda.
The plan to produce local ice cream began more than a year ago, when the company purchased the necessary equipment.
“We didn’t really start working on it hard core until after the first of the year,” Seiffert said. “We’ve been doing a lot of (research and development) between January and now.”
The first batches of ice cream were produced on Wednesday, April 11. A total of eight flavors began being offered this week.
“Our plan after that is to probably keep some of the top sellers, and each season we’ll have some new flavors that come out,” Seiffert said. “It will be an ever-evolving process.”
The creamery will host an ice cream launch party on Saturday, April 21.
“The event will run all day, with local vendors promoting their products,” Seiffert said.
For a fee, customers will have the opportunity to tackle the ice cream challenge: 10 scoops of ice cream in 10 minutes. Those who complete it will receive a free Kalona Creamery T-shirt and $10 gift card.
