ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

In an intense match up against WACO on Friday night, Iowa Mennonite School emerged with a 57-42 win.

Iowa Mennonite outscored the Warriors in every quarter of the game, yet WACO always trailed close behind. Both teams scored in their initial possessions to start the game, kindling an energetic atmosphere among both players and fans.

In the first minutes, Iowa Mennonite senior Reggie Borntrager picked off a Warrior pass, only to be stolen back by WACO. As soon as Iowa Mennonite got the ball back they were ready to score.

The Iowa Mennonite offense went on an scoring streak, forcing WACO to call a timeout. Cole Ours, however, was unphased by this pause, and immediately splashed a three. WACO’s Drew Kissel answered Ours with a deep 3-pointer of his own, closing in on Iowa Mennonite’s three-point lead of 23-20 at the half.

Iowa Mennonite head coach Dwight Gingerich brought senior Mitchell Schmieder in for the second half. Schmieder suffered an ankle sprain against Winfield-Mount Union just three days earlier.

Schmieder scored nine points and had five rebounds, despite playing a fraction of his usual time. The third quarter featured 14 points from the Warriors, three of which were 3-pointers. Iowa Mennonite still outscored WACO by six, ending the third 40-30.

Even to start the fourth quarter, the intensity and points did not subside. The Warriors exhibited great stamina, but could not catch up to Iowa Mennonite’s widening lead, aided by a 3-pointer from Eli Ours in the corner.

Colton Horak of WACO was called for a charge midway through the fourth and minutes later Iowa Mennonite’s Isaiah Swantz drew Horak’s fifth foul with one minute remaining. Swantz sunk both his free throws. Iowa Mennonite finished 57-42 over WACO.
