ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

County Supervisor Bob Yoder of Kalona spoke during the Kalona City Council’s public forum Monday, informing the council that some hard decisions would have to be made in a year or two as to the future of ambulance service in the county. He stated that there did not appear to be a sustainable future for the Washington Ambulance Service, owned by fellow Supervisor Richard Young. Yoder noted that Medicare and Medicaid payments for ambulance service were sometimes 50 percent of what was charged.

Possible solutions included more local government subsidies for the ambulance service or turning it over to the Washington County Hospital and Clinics or Washington County.

City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh told the council that as a REAP (Resource Enhancement and Protection) grant project, the application deadline was too near to complete the needed preliminary work for a trail from Kalona proper to the Harvest Hill Subdivision.
