It’s hard to believe that we are approximately three weeks from the start of school. The coming school year at Mid-Prairie brings many changes with the transition to elementary, grade-alike attendance centers and the moving of fifth grade to the Middle School.

The summer has been spent working on the logistics of the transition. I can’t compliment the custodians enough for the positive way they have tackled the movement of furniture, equipment, and instructional materials, throughout the district. Teresa Hartley, our new Transportation Director, is working diligently with our hired consultant to tackle all of the issues related to transportation. Teachers will meet before school starts to plan for the start of the year.

Several special events have been planned between now and the start of school to help parents and students prepare for the new year.

On Friday, Aug. 11, the Mid-Prairie Student Boosters, the parent support group for the middle school and the two elementary schools, will be sponsoring a free Family Movie Night on the Middle School lawn starting at 8:30 p.m. Family members are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets to watch the movie E.T. Water and popcorn will be supplied by the boosters.

The Mid-Prairie School District will be conducting Transportation Night on Wednesday, Aug. 16 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Mid-Prairie High School in Wellman. Transportation Director Teresa Hartley and all of the district’s bus drivers will be on hand to meet parents and students. Parents will receive the latest transportation and route schedule information and elementary students will be able to pick up their bus badge that will help alleviate confusion at the start of the year.

The next day on Thursday, Aug. 17, a district wide public open house will be held from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM in all of the district’s attendance centers including the Home School Education Center. Parents and students will be able to tour the facilities. Most teachers will be working in their classrooms that day and some associates will be available in each building to offer tours. An adult must accompany all elementary and middle school students during the open house.

On Aug. 21 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, the Student Booster Group will be having Ice Cream Socials at Mid-Prairie East and West Elementary Schools and at the Middle School for preschool through fifth grade students. Students and their families are encouraged to bring their school supplies, meet their teachers and other school personnel, and enjoy some ice cream.

Finally, on Tuesday morning, Aug. 22, kindergarten, fifth, sixth and ninth grade students will have an opportunity to experience a half-day of school. This allows students in classes that are new to different buildings get a “head start” with becoming familiar with the culture and procedures of their new building.

It is our hope that these events between now and the start of the school year will help alleviate some of the stress that always occurs when major changes happen. By attending these events, parents and students have the opportunity to become better acquainted with new classmates, schedules, procedures and school personnel.
