Propelled by double-digit kills from Rubye Ney and Mia Graber, the Iowa Mennonite volleyball squad won a three-set sweep over Lone Tree.

Iowa Mennonite won 25-17, 25-19 and 25-11. The Iowa Mennonite squad caught fire in the last set, putting the Lady Lions down with eight straight points to start out and a seven-point streak later in the set.

“It was just that we had really great serve-receive today from the back row,” Ney said. “We were able to get a nice pass to Yani (Gutierrez), who would set it for us.”

The win was the first of the season for Iowa Mennonite and starts off the Southeast Iowa Super Conference schedule with a win.

“That was the best we’ve played so far. We were talking more and kept our energy up,” Ney said.

The Lady Lions were led by Skylar Smith with three kills on the day. And both Kylie Patterson and Kailyn Pettitt added a pair of kills.

While the Lady Lions didn’t come up with the win, coach Lora Sieverding said she was happy with the way her team played. With only one senior on the varsity squad, she said matches like this will help propel the team forward and can act as teachable moments.

Sieverding said the first two sets, in which Lone Tree held some leads and were competitive to the end, showing where the team can be.

Lone Tree junior Whitney Willoz had a pair of aces on 9-9 serving and freshman Kasey Chown led the Lady Lions with 14 digs.

Lone Tree goes winless at Montezuma tournament

The Lady Lions went 0-3 during the trip to Montezuma, but the Lady Lions nearly took a three-set match against GMG.

The Lady Lions took set one against the Warriors 22-20 before dropping the second 21-11. In the final set they lost 15-8. Lily Miller and Kylie Patterson led they way with three kills each. The Lady Lions had four aces during the match, with Whitney Willoz, Holley Johnson, Kasey Chown and Lily Miller each having one.

The other two were straight set losses against Montezuma and Gladbrook-Reinbeck.

Iowa Mennonite runner-up at Notre Dame Invitational

Iowa Mennonite went 3-1 on the day and took runner-up at the Notre Dame Invitational, only losing in the final to Class 3A No. 4 Davenport Assumption.

Iowa Mennonite dropped the final 2-0 (25-20, 25-15) to Assumption.

The Iowa Mennonite squad went 3-0 during pool play, dropping Pekin and Danville in straight sets and winning a thriller over host Notre Dame in three sets.

After losing the first set 21-11, the Iowa Mennonite squad rallied to win 21-14 and 15-9 in the final two sets.

In a 2-0 win over Danville Mia Graber had four aces and Rubye Ney had seven kills. Suzanna Yoder led the way with 12 digs while Samantha Miller had nine assists.
