On Thursday, March 29, Gov. Kim Reynolds signed legislation to improve Iowa mental health care policy and prevent teen suicides. House File 2456 aims to set out a comprehensive approach to improving Iowa’s mental health. The funding for the effort is yet to be determined. Senate File 2113 requires Iowa schools to increase efforts to prevent youth suicides. Sen. Kevin Kinney was at the signing of the legislation.
“I was one of a number of current and former law enforcement officers at the bill signing for this legislation,” Kinney said. “Far too often, Iowa families without access to effective mental health care end up in the legal system. That’s a mistake in so many ways. I will keep pressing on this issue because Iowa must do a better job of providing effective, consistent treatment.”
