The Iowa Network against Human Trafficking has honored Amana Middle School Principal Brad Fox and State Senator Kevin Kinney of Oxford for their work against a multistate sex trafficking ring active in Iowa. In 2005, Fox and Kinney worked together to help dismantle a sex trafficking ring with connections in Cosgrove, Williamsburg, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Chicago and St. Paul. At the time, Kinney was an investigator in the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

Fox contacted Kinney to share his concerns about the welfare of some of his students. Their work together made it possible for Kinney and other law enforcement officers to shut down the sex trafficking ring and rescue a 13-year-old girl.

The presentation took place on Jan. 9 in the Governor’s formal office at the Iowa Statehouse. At the same time, Governor Terry Branstad signed a proclamation declaring January to be Iowa’s first-ever “Slavery and Human Trafficking Awareness and Prevention Month.”
