ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Lone Tree will enter this season with a new coach at the helm in Clint Jones.

Jones, who previously coached at Highland for 16 years until the 2017-2018 season, will take over a program with some promising young wrestlers.

Jones coached two state champions during his tenure at Highland in Bryce West and Drew West. Bryce West won 120-pound titles at Highland in 2015 and 2016, Drew West won the 2014 title at 106 pounds.

“I try and emphasize to wrestlers that it’s about improvement. If you strive for improvement everything will build around that,” Jones said.

He said his coaching style of working to a base level fundamentals then working with wrestlers to exploit their strengths should build toward that improvement.

“There are some fundamental musts for all wrestlers, but there is nuance (after that),” he said.

Lone Tree returns one wrestler that made it to the district tournament in Bryce Thompson, who competed at 106 pounds last season.

Other returning wrestlers from Lone Tree’s varsity squad include Tim Mills, Trey Shalla, and Ty Griffin.

Jones said those with returning varsity experience combined with some new faces will work to build the program up.

“I think the biggest thing is trying to build from the ground up,” he said.

Jones wants the team to focus on remaining positive and working hard and the improvement will come.

The Lions open up their season on Dec. 1 at 10 a.m. at Montezuma High School. Their first home meet will be on Dec. 13 in a conference triangular against Mediapolis and West Burlington.
