The City of Wellman is making a pitch to the folks who run RAGBRAI to be included as a stop on the annual bike ride across the state.

City Councilman Mark Philpot contacted RAGBRAI officials after it was announced at the end of January that the overnight stop for Thursday, July 26, is in Sigourney and the overnight stop for Friday, July 27, is in Iowa City.

Wellman falls about halfway between the two and would be a logical lunch stop for bike riders.

City Administrator Kelly Litwiller said that RAGBRAI officials have not determined the routes between towns. Those routes will be announced in March.

“They were pretty happy that we contacted them,” Litwiller said, adding that it sounds like the city could possibly get named a lunch stop.

The City Council Monday evening discussed possible entertainment and a central location for events.

“There are a lot of people in town that are onboard with this,” Litwiller said. “A lot of the business owners were excited about that.”

Philpot “has taken the reins” on the project, Litwiller said. In addition to entertainment, the city administrator said there are lots of logistical issues to consider – coordinating with the sheriff, advertising the stop to riders and even securing a sufficient number of portable toilets for the day.

RAGBRAI features 10,000 plus bike riders in a weeklong trek across the state. This year’s event will take place from July 22 to 28 and will start in Onawa and end in Davenport.
