Students from both Mid-Prairie Middle School and Mid-Prairie High School each took hour shifts Oct. 11 after an early release during which the students helped box up meals aimed at fighting hunger both at home and across the United States.

Working with Kalona branch of Take Away Hunger, facilitated through Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church, the Mid-Prairie School District and Feed the Kids covered the costs that were required to assemble four lines of boxes during a two-hour span Wednesday afternoon.

Each line consists of eight boxes of food packages, a mix of rice and beans, with each box holding 36 packs. Each pack makes six meals for families in need. As a result, 6,912 meals were packed over the course of two hours.

The school district funded the boxing of three of the four lines, which will be shipped to Houston to help people there. Feed the Kids covered the fourth line and will keep 1,728 meals available to help fight hunger locally.

This is the second year Mid-Prairie students have helped the organization pack food, the first time coming two years ago.
