ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Editor:

The Kalona News recently recalled that 100 years ago, around Aug. 1 in Wellman, Ora Starr had her pocketbook stolen while shopping.

She issued this stern and understandable demand:

“WARNING: I wish to notify the party that took my pocketbook from the Farmer’s Store Saturday night that they had better return it at once or they will be punished according to law.”

Mrs. Starr, unfortunately, did not recover her pocketbook. For a more “positive” outcome, she should have written this:

“WARNING: Never, ever, steal my pocketbook again or you will suffer consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before. We are no longer a community that will stand for your demented actions of violence and thievery. Be cautious!”

I’m confident that stellar diplomatic utterance would have had the thief return the item immediately.
