ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The Highland school board Monday approved the first reading of a new policy that would create a student school board representative.

The idea is in its infancy and will be further developed in a subsequent draft of the policy.

“I like the value of always having a student here for discussion and feedback,” high school Principal Angela Hazelett said.

Under the initial proposal, a representative and alternate will be elected by the student body in May each year to represent students on the school board the following school year.

The student representative would be non-voting and would participate in discussions, sitting at the board table. The student would not be included in closed sessions of the board.

The school board debated having the student selected by the principal and having a rotating group of students throughout the year.

Board member Mike Golden said there would be value in having the same student or the same couple of students throughout the year.

“I think it would be nice to get student feedback,” board member Megan Allen said, who made the suggestion to have the representative elected rather than appointed by the principal.
