There will not be a carnival on the midway at the Washington County Fair this year, despite having signed a contract with the 2017 carnival in December.

The news was part of the annual report to the county board of supervisors Jan. 16.

The carnival canceled its contract with the county, according to the terms of the contract. The board learned that since there are fewer carnival groups around, they have become more selective as to where they go.

But thanks to board members attending a special trade show in Las Vegas recently, the county fair will have a popular 9/11 memorial exhibit for three days. The cost for the exhibit is $12,000.

The carnival required a $45,000 guaranteed base fee. The fair board said it already has some donations for the exhibit cost and was expecting more to come.

In its report, members of the county fair board described projects completed in 2017, including $46,000 in sewer improvements, a $5,000 retaining wall, $10,000 in playground additions and $6,000 for solar panels – and outlined plans for a $400,000 fertile barn to serve more than cattle.

The board already has $165,000 in donations for the project, and it hopes to have construction started by the end of July, right after the county fair.

The goal is to have a multi-use facility that can accommodate 4-H projects. There are currently 396 total 4-H members in the county, with an additional 131 Clover Kids.
