ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Highland High School has recently been emphasizing career-focused education, even in creative writing courses.

Self-published author Jon Chapman released his book “The Doors of Rema: The Spiral City” in 2016 and shared his advice on Monday, Nov. 19, to students in Highland’s creative writing classes.

Chapman created and sold his own book as well as built his own website for the novel.

He communicated some of the processes and challenges involved with the writing process, the publication process and the site creation.

Students wrote and asked their own questions for Chapman and learned a lot from the visit.

Chapman explained that it is easier than ever to produce, share and sell whatever creative medium one is interested in thanks to the Internet.

His top one piece of advice as a writer is to overcome one’s fear of sharing and overcome the fear of criticism and rejection. He also recommended finishing what one starts.

The second installment of “The Doors of Rema” is in the works and may be out sometime next year.
