ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The weather beaten sign adorned with the logos of community service groups that had welcomed people coming in from the south to Lone Tree is gone. It was recently replaced by a duplicate of the welcome sign that’s been situated in North (Tank) Park for the last decade.

Yakish Construction put in the footing for the new sign and Jeremy Dotsen of MD Masonry did the brick work. The site awaits landscaping and lighting but is otherwise complete. Work was also done on the sign in North Park, raising it up so that it is clearly visible above the flower bed at its base.

The old sign stood at the city limits. The new one is further to the south, in the county and on land owned by Shirley Dodson and Bob Buline. A small grove of trees was removed to ensure a clear view, but one tree, in honor of the original “Lone Tree”, remains. For those unfamiliar with the original “Lone Tree”, it was an elm that had begun life in the late 1780’s. It managed to survive frequent prairie fires to become the only tree on a vast expanse of tall grass prairie. It was the only tree when Lone Tree was first settled in the 1840s and 1850s, and by 1872, when Lone Tree was first incorporated, the tree had become such a landmark that the city was named after it. The elm succumbed to Dutch Elm disease in the late 1960s. Later a sign was erected as a memorial on East Pioneer where the tree had stood

The new welcome sign was commissioned and erected by the Lone Tree Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber is a non-profit community service organization. Membership is open to everyone, not just business owners. It meets on the third Monday of the month.
