ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Now with the season in full swing, area cross country teams are working on staying healthy and incremental improvement. Striving towards those goals Highland, Lone Tree and Iowa Mennonite all ran at the Fairfield meet last Thursday.

Highland

According to Highland Coach Angie Strobel the improvement has come quickly as the team ran at their third meet of the season.

“I’m overall very happy with the consistent improvement of all the athletes,” Strobel said.

“Meet after meet they set goals for themselves and push to reach those.”

The Highland girls team placed fifth in the eight team field and was led by a pair of runners, Taylor Sublette and Madison Thomann who placed 13th and 15th with times of 22:39 and 22:47.

The girls team was missing their fourth runner Alli Brand to injury and Strobel said the team is looking forward to getting her back and is hoping to compete in the top three at their remaining meets.

The Highland boys team placed eighth in the nine team field, but Strobel said she sees the improvement from her team as the season goes on.

They were also led by a pair of runners in Bryan Redlinger and Mason Manley who came in one second apart at 21:03 and 21:04 at 31st and 32nd place.

“It’s ideal to have teammates that can push you, and I’m hopeful that Mason can push Bryan so that both of them are clocking times under 20 minutes in the next few weeks,” Strobel said.

Lone Tree

The Lone Tree girls had the best local finish with a fourth out of eight team finish and Macie Bopp placed sixth in the small school girls race with a time of 21:54.

The Lone Tree boys team finished sixth of nine led by Alberto Cortes with a 19:33 finish.

IMS

Levi Geyer is getting into mid-season form as the lead runner for Iowa Mennonite and finished just seven seconds off of the first place runner. Geyer finished with a 17:31 and IMS coach Martin Gingerich said he was happy with the “great race” Geyer ran.

Gingerich said that Gideon Sangare, who placed 52nd with a 23:27 showed a lot of improvement. He ran a 26:20 at the IMS Early Bird meet earlier this season.

The girls team got a huge boost getting their No. 1 runner Mackenzie Gutierrez back as she ran alongside IMS No. 2 Sarena Gerber during most of the race. Gutierrez finished in 31st place with 25:15 and Gerber ran a 25:17 and finished in 32nd place.

“Mackenzie Gutierrez fought off a strong challenge from sophomore Sarena Gerber to be the team’s number one runner for the first time this year,” Gingerich said. “Both runners made huge improvements over their time on this course last year.”
