ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The Lone Tree City Council Monday night endorsed a plan for a splash pad in the city park.

The splash pad would feature a number of water spouts and sprays on a round, 500-square-foot concrete pad.

The city Park Commission has been working on the plans for months. After much research, the commission settled on a proposal from Vortex, a Montreal-based company that has installed more than 7,000 water play systems around the world, including more than 100 in Nebraska and Iowa.

The Lone Tree plan carries a price tag of about $80,000 plus the cost of running utilities to the site, estimated at $20,000.

The council’s action endorsing the plan allows the commission to begin fundraising for the project.

“It’s almost turnkey,” Dickey said. “We can’t apply for grants without everything figured out.”

Mayor Jonathan Green suggested the commission raise $90,000 before the city sign a contract with Vortex.

The plan is for the project construction to be funded by grants and fundraising. The city will cover the cost of water and maintenance.

Scott Stefanc, representing Vortex, said the splash pad would not recirculate water but use it only once. He said that recirculating the water requires extensive daily maintenance to monitor chemical levels and filters.
