ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Partnership between Washington County Extension and Highland Elementary Support Organization announced the After School STEM Club is now taking registrations for the October and November.

These science clubs are open to all students in second through fifth grade at Highland Elementary who want to experiment more with science, technology, engineering, and math.

Washington County Extension and 4-H and Highland ESO are partnering together to offer additional and fun ways for Highland youth to interact with science more in a hands-on setting, while making new friends and connecting with caring adults in the community.

Each session will use an Engineering is Elementary and State 4-H curriculum.

The October session is for second and third grade students only for Oct. 16, 23 and 30 and titled “Taking the Plunge” taught by Sonya Stanerson and ESO volunteers.

Ocean engineering will come to Iowa as students learn about sounding poles and sonar maps to graph the ocean floor. They will build submersibles to retrieve “valuable packages” lost at sea.

The November session is for fourth and fifth grade students only to run Nov. 13, 20 and 27. It is called “Recycled Racers” and will be taught by Angie McNurlan and ESO volunteers.

Students will be challenged to see how items can be recycled into useful items. They will turn into green engineers and use recycled materials to engineer their own toy cars and compete in a Recycled Racer Rally.

Registrations accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis until Oct. 5 at the Highland Elementary office with limited space available. There is a $10 fee due with the registration form for each session.

Forms are also available on the Extension website at www.extension.iastate.edu/washington.
