ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

On Monday Iowa Mennonite school played host to 20 schools and hundreds of people as they hosted a cross country meet.

With multiple schools just a short drive away from Iowa Mennonite, the course was packed with spectators cheering on runners along the way.

“I really like it, just for the Iowa Mennonite people to see the running community and a big event like this,” Iowa Mennonite coach Marty Gingerich said.

For the girls, freshman Leah Bontrager was the top finisher for Iowa Mennonite in 30th place with a time of 22:29. Bontrager has continued to show improvement over the season and Gingerich said it has come down to her getting the basics right.

“She ran a lot this summer, she has a positive attitude and works hard in practice,” Gingerich said.

He said not only has Bontrager done well individually, but her effort has improved the team atmosphere.

“She has brought the level of the team up. For example, Sarena (Gerber) is running much better than last year,” Gingerich said. “It’s more than just one person running for themselves; we’re not passing balls around but they’re still a team.

Gerber, who finished 43rd with a season best time of 23:26, said running on home turf at the Iowa Mennonite campus was a big boost.

“It really just motivates you to kick more. It’s nice to have a bunch of people that you know cheering you on,” Gerber said.

Esther Hughes finished 86th in 25:56, Julia Boller was 127th in 28:26, Rachel Geyer was 138th in 29:33 and Ainsley Shaw was 163rd in 36:50.

Brian Nchoe continued to lead the Iowa Mennointe boys and finished in 19th place with a time of 18:53. Jacob Boller was 71st with a time of 20:44. John Hughes, Aaron Hershberger, Collin Miller and Tobias Chen rounded out the varsity lineup.

Iowa Mennonite will run next at the SEISC meet at Cedarcrest Country Club on Oct. 4.
