Wanda Cain worked for years as manager of the Kalona Casey’s.
Her team became known as Wanda’s Warriors.
On Oct. 13, an expanded team of Wanda’s Warriors will take to the streets of Kalona to raise money to help women with breast cancer.
“Everyone in town knew Wanda,” said her son, Tyler. “She was just Mom to me.”
Wanda died in July 2014 after years of battling cancer.
The year after her death, an annual 5K run and walk started to raise money to help others who are fighting the disease.
In the past, money raised with the run provided gas cards for cancer patients and their families to assist with travel to and from appointments and treatment.
This year, the money will go to the American Cancer Society and the Especially For You Fund, which provides free mammograms and breast-care services for area individuals in need.
This year’s race will be Saturday, Oct. 13, starting at 9 a.m. at the Mid-Prairie East Elementary School in Kalona. It will follow the same route as previous years through Kalona streets north of Highway 22.
Many of those who participate in the run were helped by Wanda when she was alive.
“She would do anything for anyone,” Tyler said. “My mother loved to help others and always did when she could.”
He is looking for a good turnout again this year.
“This is our chance to keep her love going strong by helping those affected by cancer.”
