ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

My love story is one much like a fairy tale.

I was best friends with my (now husband) in high school. Although back then he was known as “Big Nate.” He weighed more than 330 pounds and wrecked more cars then we could keep track of. In fact. At one point, my dad forbid my younger sister and I to ride in a car with our friend Nate from Kalona because of how reckless he was.

I left and moved to Alabama, got engaged to another man and came home to finish planning the wedding. I had lost contact with my buddy Nate for several years but remained friends with his sister Hannah. I was at her house reconnecting after my time away from home and in walks her little (big brother) Nate. Although he had lost 120 pounds and I hardly recognized him.

Later we found out his sister had secretly planned the reunion because she hoped we could heal our friendship and the bad way it ended when I left. That night, we made supper together, bickered (the way we always used to) and the ended the night with an innocent dance...all the while I was still engaged to my Alabama fiancé.

Fast forward several months. My engagement ended in a painful way when my fiancé was unfaithful and I began a long process of starting my life back here in Iowa. Every once in a while Nate and I would talk here and there and eventually began hanging out as we used to. That grew into a beautiful love which had years of history.

I still have a hard time believing I am married to “Big Nate from Kalona” but he will tell you today, that he always loved me ever since we were 16. He just had to wait for me. He was always there, loving me from afar.

He proposed to me in an unbelievable way having made a video with our friends the Gehman’s and tricked me into thinking we were seeing an old favorite “Oklahoma.” But when the theatre got dark, the proposal video started...and when it ended he came in and I turned around to see the theatre filled with my friends and family.

We now have two boys with our third on the way. We weren’t high school sweethearts, but he has loved me since high school and finally got me.
