Mid-Prairie traveled to Mount Mercy University last week to take on Iowa City Liberty in a non-conference doubleheader. The Lightning took wins in both games with walk-off hits.

In game one, Mid-Prairie scrambled back in their final at-bat in the seventh inning to score six runs and push a 4-2 deficit to an 8-4 lead. They did that behind hits from Jaselyn Robertson and Myah Lugar, walks drawn from Hayley Yoder and Abbi Patterson and both Cassidy Rourke and Karsen Jehle reached on errors.

Liberty then rattled off seven singles in eight batters to score five runs and win the game 9-8. The game winning hit was a single from Liberty’s pitcher in game one, Kara Maiers. The Golden Hawks struck out 14 times in the game one loss.

Game two went to extra innings, with the Golden Hawks and Lightning sitting tied at one after regulation. Marit McCaffery hit a walk-off double to score on in the bottom of the ninth inning to win game two.

Earlier in the week on Tuesday Mid-Prairie dropped both games of a doubleheader at Wilton 7-4 and 16-6. Both Rylee Vercande and Abbi Patterson homered in the game to drive in all four Golden Hawk runs.

On Friday the Golden Hawks lost a 14-2 contest against Camanche.

Mid-Prairie hosted their home tournament last weekend, dropping games to Clear Creek-Aama (5-0) and Dubuque Hempstead (10-0). The Golden Hawk offense struggled, scoring zero runs in the two games.

On Monday the Golden Hawks took on Class 5A Bettendorf, losing both games to the Bulldogs. Bettendorf won game one 15-5 and game two 8-2.

The Golden Hawks had a packed week, playing nine games in seven days.

Mid-Prairie played their opening round of the regional softball tournament on Tuesday at Williamsburg. If they win, the Golden Hawks would then play on Friday, July 6 at West Liberty.
