ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

With the school year coming to a close, the first through third grade students of West Elementary took an adventure May 26 as they traveled to the Land Down Under without even having to leave the building.

The students watched a joint video presentation on Australia before splitting into different groups where they checked various activities off on their passport.

Students immersed themselves in a virtual tour of the country, sampled the music and cuisine of the country, decorated boomerangs, and played some games during their trip. Second grade teacher Renee Fisher stated that each activity speaks to different students.

“The restaurant is always popular. The games give students a chance for movement, the art activity allows students to express their creative side, and the music and story-telling station gives students a chance to appreciate the country and its history even more,” she said.

“The new station this year, using the Google Expedition glasses gave us a chance to take students to areas we have been talking about, and giving the feeling even more of being at the places we talk about.”

Fisher said they’ve been doing the study for over two decades with the goal of giving the students a way to learn more about the country through fun experiences, including highlighting differences between the destination country and the United States.
