ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The Mid Prairie 8th graders concluded their season Thursday night in Wellman, taking on the Durant Wildcats.

Mid Prairie moved the ball well on their first possession, moving into the red zone on a carry by Joe Allred. The Golden Hawks were stopped on fourth down, however and gave the ball to the Wildcats. The defense forced a three and out by the Wildcats, and the Golden Hawks looked to have solid field position for their next drive. Defensive end Aaron Hershberger had other plans, however, blocking the Wildcat punt after a high snap and recovering the ball in the end zone to put the Golden Hawks on the board, 6-0.

The Golden Hawk offense was able to move the ball through the first half, but was unable to put any points on the board. The defense was able to hold back the Wildcats and carried a 6-0 lead into halftime.

Out of the intermission, the Golden Hawk offense moved the ball down the field using a mix of runners. A 16-yard run by running back Vinnie Bowlin capped the 9-play drive with the Golden Hawk touchdown.

The defense took over at that point, with linebacker Keagan Brady intercepting the Durant pass and returning it 35 yards for the touchdown. The ensuing kick pinned the Wildcats inside their own 5 yard-line and the stingy Mid-Prairie defense forced another fumble, this time recovered by defensive end Connor Shalla for the touchdown, making the score 27-0.

Durant was able to break off two long runs to close the gap to 27-14. Fullbacks Nathan Quinby and Keegan Gingerich as well as wide receiver Nick Slabaugh were able to slow the Wildcat momentum with big runs as Mid Prairie ran down the clock to seal the 27-14 victory.

Linebackers Vinnie Bowlin and Caleb Thomas led the defensive effort with nine and four tackles respectively.

“That was a great team effort today. We had a dominant defensive effort with two different groups of 11 guys allowing us to stay fresh and hungry when we were on defense. This is a team that achieved more than their record showed this season. Two of our losses we scored as many touchdowns as our opponent, but just couldn’t take advantage offensively or defensively on conversions” Coach Walther said after the game.

The 8th grade squad finishes the season with a 3-3 record.
