June 28, 2018 Star Trek historians set for Trekfest

A husband and wife team will be the keynote speakers at Trekfest on Friday, June 29, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, June 30, at 2:30 p.m.

John and Maria Jose Tenuto, sociology professors who are Star Trek historians, will speak Friday night at St. Mary’s parish hall in Riverside. Their subject will be “Thriving on Limitations: The Making of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn.”

The Tenutos have been sociology professors at the College of Lake County for 20 years. Both have won teaching honors, including outstanding faculty of the year three times for John and the 2016 values recognition award for learning for Maria Jose.

The couple appeared in the Netflix documentary series “The Toys That Made Us” in both the Star Trek and Star Wars themed episodes, in addition to appearances on the Decades Network, BBC Radio, WGN News, and CBS News.

The Tenuto’s write a monthly article for the official website. They have been married 20 years this year and have a 16-year-old son, Nicholas Jose.

The Friday presentation will celebrate the amazing actresses, actors, and behind-the-scene artists who worked on Nicholas Meyer’s “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” with a multimedia presentation.

On Saturday, their presentation will be “A Remarkable Life: A Tribute to Leonard Nimoy.”

The son of Russian-Jewish immigrants, actor and director Nimoy lived an life that took him from a childhood in Boston’s West End during the Great Depression to becoming a true international and multi-generational icon.
