Iowa Mennonite used a pair of three-set wins over Highland and WACO to advance to Saturday's SEISC quarterfinals.

Thursday's pool play at Highland High School consisted of Van Buren, Iowa Mennonite, WACO and Highland. Van Buren won the pool with a 3-0 record and Iowa Mennonite took runner-up at 2-1.

After a solid 21-16 win in the first set over WACO, Iowa Mennonite looked out of sorts and the Warriors used some big kills to take momentum and tie things up by winning set two 21-9.

In the decider, Iowa Mennonite took a 7-0 lead after Samantha Miller had four aces and a kill in the seven-point streak. From there WACO never really recovered and Iowa Mennonite continued to easily set up their offense.

Of the points in the 15-5 decider win, 11 came on aces, kills or blocks by Iowa Mennonite.

Iowa Mennonite then took on Highland. The two teams battled back and forth in set one, with service errors hampering both sides. Iowa Mennonite took set one 21-17.

Highland then battled back, using a pair of kills in set two from Sarah Schneider and Emilee Thomann to win 21-17.

In the decider both teams battled back-and-forth. The score was tied 9-9 after a big Sarah Schneider kill set up by Emily Streb and the Huskies seemed like they had momentum.

Iowa Mennonite took two points in a row and forced a Highland timeout. After the timeout Iowa Mennonite finished off the game by not allowing the Huskies to score another point, winning 15-9.

Highland went 0-3 on the day, dropping their first match to Van Buren 21-10, 21-11. They lost their final match to WACO 21-16, 21-17. Despite the loss to WACO, the Huskies had 5-plus point streaks near the end of both sets.

Iowa Mennonite now moves on to the quarterfinals Saturday at Southeastern Community College in Burlington, Iowa. They will face off against Holy Trinity Catholic, who is ranked No. 3 in Class 1A, at 5 p.m.
