Both the Lone Tree and Highland school boards have approved the concept of sharing a superintendent between the two districts for three years starting with the next school year.
The Highland school board approved the concept Monday night on a 6-1 vote with Lois Schneider dissenting.
The Lone Tree school board approved sharing at its December meeting on a 3-2 vote, with board President Christina Magruder and board member Josh Zaruba voting “no.”
Magruder said the districts could have shared positions other than the superintendent to achieve the same budget savings while Zaruba said he favored a two-year agreement rather than the three years called for in the motion that was approved.
With both boards approving the concept of sharing and the broad terms, a committee of three Highland board members and two Lone Tree board members will hammer out an agreement that will go to both boards for final approval in February.
From Highland, the committee representatives will be board President Nate Robinson, Megan Allen and Lois Schneider. From Lone Tree, the representatives will be board President Christina Magruder and Joel Yedlik.
Yedlik attended the Highland board meeting Monday but did not comment on the vote.
Allen was adamant that she wanted to be on the committee.
“I want to be on it,” she told fellow board members. “I want my opinions out there.”
A draft of the sharing agreement was presented to the Highland board Monday. The joint committee will put together the agreement that will be presented to the boards.
The agreement, according to the draft, could be modified each year with the approval of both school boards. If both boards do not agree to changes, the original agreement remains in place.
Salary and benefits would be based on the 2019-2020 school year, with both school boards conducting annual evaluations of the superintendent.
The superintendent position is not the only one that will be shared. Both boards approved the concept of multiple positions shared between the districts.
