With the help of a number of organizations and businesses, the Riverside Fire Department recently completed construction of its new burn training facility.

The building, constructed from three metal shipping containers, will allow area fire departments to train under live fire conditions.

“The big thing getting this structure is that it’s something we can do live fire training in,” Riverside Fire Chief Chad Smothers said. “We were doing live training in Coralville. Now, we can do everything right here in house.”

The structure features three different types of roof styles commonly found in the area.

“With those, we can practice vertical ventilation to allow smoke and heat out,” Smothers said.

The doors have forceful entry props to simulate locked doors.

“Inside, the layout is like a typical residential structure,” Smothers said. “There are four different areas we can burn in.”

He added that the four most typical residential fire scenarios are first floor, second floor, garage and attic.

Smothers said that the facility will be available to all of Riverside’s mutual aid fire departments to use for training, including Hills, Kalona and Ainsworth.

“We also plan to do some joint trainings,” he said.
