ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Fred Hubbell made a stop last week in Riverside to hear agricultural concerns.

Hubbell visited with a handful of farmers and bankers at Stutsman Farm in rural Riverside.

“How nervous are the banks getting about the tariffs and trade wars these days?” Hubbell asked the group.

Hills Bank and Trust Senior Vice President Tim Smith pointed out that last year, about two-thirds of farmers in the state made little or no money.

“That was before the tariffs,” Smith said. “If this thing is resolved relatively quickly, they should be OK, but if it drags out for an extended period of time, it could be tough on Iowa.”

Roger Stutsman added, “Most of our guys are in pretty good shape. It doesn’t mean they’ll make a lot of money this year though.”
